Expansion of Services for Safe Future

The State Scientific and Technical Center for Nuclear and Radiation Safety (SSTC NRS) adheres to its mission of scientific and technical support for state regulation of nuclear and radiation safety in Ukraine to protect the public and the environment against man-made radiological effects and recognizes that comprehensive development and expansion of capabilities are among its responsibilities. Director of SSTC NRS, Ihor Shevchenko, always points out this fact. According to Ihor Shevchenko, we should keep up with the times and focus our working standards on latest trends in technology. SSTC NRS follows this principle.

This is evidenced by three new areas that emerged in the last year: Testing Center, Qualia-Test Conformity Assessment Center, and Center for Innovation in Nuclear Technologies for Safe Future (INTENSA).

INTENSA was established recently at the end of 2020 on premises of the reorganized SSTC NRS Slavutych Subsidiary, allowing its engineering capabilities and design and engineering experience to be retained.

INTENSA activities will include technical assessments and scientific, design, and analytical efforts on safe decommissioning of NPPs and radioactive waste and spent fuel management.

A significant part of activities will also concern the development and implementation of technical solutions to ensure safety of nuclear facilities, analytical efforts, and applied studies within national and international projects. In addition, INTENSA will focus on advanced nuclear technology and safe use of radiation sources.

INTENSA will allow the services provided by SSTC NRS to be extended and any conflict of interest to be avoided.

The Qualia-Test Conformity Assessment Center and Testing Center were established at SSTC NRS to perform new tasks to assess (confirm) compliance of products supplied for nuclear facilities, radwaste management facilities, uranium plants, and other radiation sources with technical specifications, on a voluntary basis in accordance with legislative procedure.

Now we can describe the results obtained within a year after the Qualia-Test Conformity Assessment Center was established. They included conformity assessments on a voluntary basis (voluntary certification) in two areas such as certification of products and quality management systems and conformity assessment as quality supervision in the manufacture of final products for fuel assemblies. The efforts also covered certification of ventilated concrete storage casks for spent fuel manufactured at the Zaporizhzhya NPP and products manufactured by Atomenergomash and its quality management system for the manufacture of components for fuel assemblies and conformity assessment of six batches of final products for fuel assemblies.

The range of services provided by the Testing Center covers radiation measurements and dose surveys (measurement of dose rate, neutron flux density, etc.) of residential buildings, public facilities, land plots, vehicles, etc. and measurements of activity concentration for gamma-emitting radionuclides in the air and density of surface contamination.

In general, by expanding its functions and capabilities, SSTC NRS demonstrates result-oriented work. This gives impetus to the implementation of best practices in national nuclear energy industry and creates prerequisites for the country’s safe nuclear potential.

We are ready for cooperation and new projects that will serve for safe future.
